The Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) exams are an essential step for those pursuing a career in the insurance industry. You’ve purchased study materials, invested the time into studying, and you’re finally ready to write the exam. Now you might be wondering… how do I register? We’re here to help! This guide provides a province-by-province breakdown of the CAIB exam registration process for all 4 CAIB exams, along with information on deferral and cancellation policies. Successfully passing each level is critical for advancing your career as an insurance broker.

Registering for CAIB exams in BC

Eligibility:

All the CAIB exam levels have the same registration procedure and cost $395 for the first attempt, which is valid for 1 year from the purchase date. That means you can pay for the exam and choose your specific date later. Pre-paying for the exam is a great way to commit yourself to the process and a psychological trick to force yourself to follow through.

Registration Process:

Step 1 – Take Your Course

Prior to taking the CAIB exam, take one of our CAIB courses (CAIB 1, CAIB 2, CAIB 3, or CAIB 4) to ensure you have the right information, training and guidance to successfully pass. Once you’ve chosen your preferred education provider, start studying. We typically recommend about 3-4 weeks of study time or about 60-80 hours in total. You can book and choose your exam date any time during your exam prep. When it comes to choosing your exam dates, we have 2 recommended methods:

  1. You can wait until you’ve gone through the program and you’re just doing your revisions. Booking at this time means you’ll have a better idea of when you’ll be ready to write.
  2. If you want to keep yourself accountable, you can also book the exam 3-6 weeks out from when you start. That way, you have to stick to a study schedule.

Step 2 – Select Your Proctor

Selecting a proctor is the second step in registering for the CAIB exam. A proctor is a person who supervises the examination and ensures that it is conducted fairly.

Note that all CAIB exams are online, but you can choose the location of your choice. Depending on your chosen exam delivery method, different proctor requirements and additional fees may apply:

  • IBABC’s virtual proctoring service: If you opt for virtual proctoring, you won’t need to find a proctor separately. The proctoring service is seamlessly integrated into the exam registration process. Simply select “Online Proctor” on the Exam Registration Form for Captus Press. For your exam day, ensure you have the following:
    • Candidate code & government issued ID (passport, citizenship card, valid driver’s license)
    • Updated & compatible browser
    • A working webcam and microphone
    • Be in a quiet, designated exam room
  • IBABC in-office: Students won’t need to fill out any proctor form. Simply select “IBABC office” when selecting your proctor. An additional $15 fee applies for in-office writing.
  • Accredited educational institution or government office (remote areas only): In such instances, only education professionals currently employed by accredited universities or colleges and government administrators (ie. Service Canada) are accepted as exam proctors.
  • Active nominee or brokerage-appointed proctor: If you prefer to take the exam at your brokerage office, an active Level 3 licensee at your office must proctor your exam.

Your selected proctor must complete the CAIB Exam Proctor Nomination & Policy Form and submit it for approval via email attachment (scanned PDF) at least three (3) business days before your chosen exam date. This applies only if you have chosen to take the exam at an accredited education institution or government office or with an active nominee or brokerage-appointed proctor. Contact details for submission can be found on the form.

Step 3 – Register for Your Online Exam

Once you’ve selected your proctor, you can proceed to register for your online CAIB exam. This step is essential; you should complete it at least three (3) business days before your exam date.

You will receive an examination candidate code via email upon successful payment processing. This code is your key to accessing the exam platform and starting your examination on the scheduled date. Keep it safe!

Remember, your exam application will only be approved if both Step 1 and Step 2 are completed within the specified timeframe.

Deferring CAIB Exam

In the event that life gets in the way and you need to defer your exam, this is a possibility. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Contact the exam location where you initially booked your exam and inform them that you want to change your exam date. You will be able to defer your CAIB exam up to 4:30 pm (PST) on the day of your exam, subject to a late deferral fee.
  • If your exam proctor changes, you must complete a new CAIB Exam Proctor Nomination & Policy Form and email the completed form to scoles@ibabc.org. Ensure that you have notified your exam proctor of your changes.

Please note that a $75 deferral fee applies if your exam is less than 7 days away, and you will be sent a link for payment.

Cancelling an Exam

If, for any reason, you need to cancel your exam sitting, follow these steps:

  • Contact the exam location where you booked your exam and let them know that you want to cancel your exam sitting.
  • Send an email to scoles@ibabc.org to officially confirm your cancellation.

Similar to deferrals, a $75 cancellation fee is applicable if your exam is less than 7 days away, and you will be sent a link for payment. It’s essential to note that no refunds will be issued after 6 months from exam registration.

  1. If you want to keep yourself accountable, you can also book the exam 3-6 weeks out from when you start. That way, you have to stick to a study schedule.

Step 2 – Register for the CAIB Exam

Once you are prepared to take your exam, register with the Insurance Broker Association of Manitoba (IBAM) to become a member. If you have already done that, you can continue reading for further instructions in case you need a refresher.

Students have a number of options to write their CAIB exam:

  • IBAM Office (online)
  • IBAM Office (paper version)
  • Online (a proctor or virtual proctor)

For those who are interested in an in-person exam, you will have a selection of dates for your sitting. If you want to write the online exam at the IBAM office, they will register you for your CAIB exam in Captus Press.

If at all possible, we recommend students write the paper version of the exam. This is because, on paper, you can easily flip back and forth and also do things like cross out multiple choice options, circle on underline key parts of a question, etc. These are all things you can’t do when you are writing a computer-based exam.

Step 3 – Proctor Selection

If your chosen mode of delivery is online at a place of your choosing, you will need to consider whether you want to take your exam with an in-person proctor or a virtual proctor.

For students who choose to write with an in-person proctor, they will need to complete their Proctor Form and submit it to the IBAM office. If approved, they must complete their registration through Captus Press for the CAIB exam.

If students prefer an online proctor, this service is available through Meazure/ProctorU. Simply check “Online Proctor” on the Captus Press registration page. They will send an email with instructions on how to proceed. An additional fee of $43.20 USD applies to use Meazure/ProctorU.

Step 4 – Email Confirmation

After your registration through Captus Press, email kate@ibammb.ca the date and time of your CAIB exam. Once IBAM approves your exam date and time and the nominated proctor, and Captus Press successfully processes the payment, you will receive an email with exam login codes. It is essential to understand that the login codes are only valid for the approved date and time of the exam sitting.

Prior to writing your exam, ensure that you are writing your exam on a desktop or laptop with a working webcam, microphone, and speakers. Check your internet connection and test out the technology beforehand to avoid any disruptions for a smooth exam process.

Deferral and Cancellation:

Since students are able to choose their exam dates and times, IBAM does not accept deferrals. Any exams that are cancelled less than 7 days in advance will be subject to a deferral fee. For more details about cancellation, contact IBAM for further details.

ONLINE vs In-Person CAIB Exams

This is a question we get asked a lot by students. While there isn’t any hard and fast rule for which is better, my general advice is to write it on paper if you can. When writing a paper exam, it is easier to flip back and forth throughout the exam and you can also do things like crossing out incorrect multiple choice options or highlighting key parts of a short answer question. Paper-based exams are rare, though, nowadays, as even in-person exams are now computer-based.

If you opt for a virtually proctored exam because you want to write the in comfort of your own home or office, then ensure you test out the technology beforehand so everything is working smoothly.

If you choose to write at an exam location (whether computer-based or paper-based), ensure you budget enough time to arrive 15-30 minutes ahead of time. Make time for parking and traffic as well.
