This guide provides a detailed breakdown of the steps needed to register for the Alberta Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 insurance exams, ensuring you have the information you need to succeed. Whether you are entering the insurance industry or advancing your career, understanding the process is critical to achieving your professional goals.

Alberta Insurance Exam Registration Process (Level 1, 2, and 3)

Eligibility Requirements

Level 1: Before you can register for this exam, you must complete an approved pre-licensing course (such as the one offered by PNC Learning). This foundational level training is designed for those starting their insurance career. It provides a thorough understanding of basic insurance principles and regulations and equips you with the skills and knowledge you need to advise clients in the real world.

Level 2: To take your Level 2 exam, you need to have passed your Level 1 exam. This level allows you to work with minimal supervision and tackle more complex client needs – especially surrounding commercial insurance. We recommend most brokers reach at least this level of licensing. We also recommend students take the Level 2 exam as quickly as possible after the Level 1 as there is significant overlap in content (especially personal lines) so you can skip those sections if the knowledge is still fresh in your mind.

Level 3: Candidates must hold a Level 2 license before they can take the Level 3 exam. Some leadership or supervisory experience is a significant asset for individuals pursuing this advanced certification but don’t worry, we’ll teach you everything you need to know. Passing this level demonstrates your ability to manage compliance and oversee operations of an insurance brokerage/agency. With this license, you can sit as the principle broker and run or manage your own brokerage. As there is only 1 principle broker per brokerage, this isn’t a very popular license.

Step-by-Step Alberta Insurance Exam Registration Process

1. Complete the Required Pre-Licensing Course:

Each level has specific pre-licensing course requirements. Enroll in and successfully complete the course tailored to your desired exam level (Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3) before proceeding. Completing this course not only makes you eligible to register but also equips you with the knowledge needed to excel in the exams.

2. Create an Account with the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC):

Visit the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) website.

If you’re a new user, set up your account by providing the necessary personal details when you log into the Portal using your CIPR number (or email) and password. If you do not have a CIPR number, click here to register for one and then go back and complete the account setup via the AIC portal.

If you already have your AIC account from previous licensing levels, then you can skip the above steps. You do not need to set up another account.

From there, you don’t have to do anything further until you have completed the PNC Learning course and met all of the requirements to receive the GLQP certification from us. We will send you details instructions and guide you through the process once you have successfully completed our course.

Once you have received the GLQP certification from PNC Learning, log back into the AIC portal. You should see a screen asking you to acknowledge that you’re a GLQP Registrant of PNC Learning – click yes. Then you will be allowed to book your insurance exam(s).

3. Submit Your Application:

Once you’re allowed to register, select the exam level for which you are registering and complete the online application form. Double-check all information for accuracy before submission to avoid delays.

4. Pay the Exam Fee:

The exam fees for Level 1, 2 & 3 are $50 for each attempt. Ensure payment is made at the time of registration.

Note that certain exam locations have additional invigilation fees. While these locations have fees involved, they also sometimes offer more flexible dates and times. Here are the following locations with additional invigilation fees:

  • Grande Prairie: $50/exam
  • Lethbridge: $50/exam for 1 exam in a single day, $75/day for 2+ exams, and $100/h for a dedicated private testing space
  • Fort McMurray: $125/person
  • Medicine Hat: $40/exam
  • Red Deer: $79/sitting

5. Choose Your Exam Date and Location:

Exams are offered at designated test centers in Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat, and Red Deer. Each location has a different exam schedule and some offer more flexibility than others. For example, in the main testing centers in Calgary and Edmonton, they only offer the general insurance exams on Fridays.

Select a date and location that fit your schedule and preferences. Consider selecting a quieter time to avoid unnecessary stress from other examinees or traffic.

Also make sure you research the exam location ahead of time to figure out how long it will take for you to get there and where you can park your car if you are driving. Allow yourself time to get there at least 15-30 minutes ahead of time so that you are not stressed out and in a rush.

Pro Tip: you can select your departure or arrival time on Google Maps to give you a better estimate.

Examination Dates and Registration Details

Exam Availability:

Exams are typically available Monday through Friday. Ensure you book early, as popular time slots may fill up quickly.

As of now, all online exams have been suspended. For medical or special accommodation, candidates will need to reach out to the AIC prior to registering for their exams. A signed medical note will have to accompany the request, and additional documentation may be required in specific cases.

Testing Locations & Schedule:

Exams are offered at multiple test centers across Alberta. These are the following exam locations and schedules:

Rescheduling or Canceling:

If you need to reschedule or cancel your exam, log in to your AIC account and submit your request at least 48 hours before your scheduled exam date.

Late changes may result in forfeiture of your registration fee, so plan accordingly. That said, the exam fees are only $50 so it’s not that big of an issue if you need to reschedule last minute. It’s better that you go in feeling well prepared. Especially because after you’ve had 3 unsuccessful attempts, there is a 6 month waiting period for your next attempt.

Getting Your Exam Results:

Because the exams are all multiple choice questions, they are marked automatically and exam results are typically provided shortly after completion, giving you a clear idea of your next steps in the certification process.
