The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC)’s main role is to protect Alberta’s insurance consumers. To do that, they enact licensing requirements and regulation of insurance agents, brokers, and independent adjusters.
ORIGIN OF THE ALBERTA INSURANCE COUNCIL
The Insurance Act formed the AIC and the organization get its authority from the President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance in Alberta. The AIC does its work at no cost of taxpayers – their operations are entirely funded by examination and licensing fees, and assessments to the insurance industry.
EDUCATION & LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
The AIC’s core mission is to protect consumers in Alberta. One of the main ways they do that is to ensure that agents, brokers, and adjusters are qualified and have adequate training. The AIC achieves this in 3 main ways:
- Provincial Licensing Exams – the AIC administers provincial licensing exams for all 3 tiers of insurance license. You need to pass these exams to attain your different license levels.
- Standardized Curriculum Development – the AIC creates standardized curricula and guidelines for approved course providers to follow.
- Approving Course Providers – to ensure quality training, the AIC approves certain course providers under their GLQP certification program.
- Continuing Education Requirements – there are strict continuing education credit requirements licensees need to meet yearly.
ALBERTA INSURANCE COUNCIL APPROVED COURSE PROVIDERS
To verify the quality of training that brokers receive, the AIC approves certain course providers under their GLQP program. Only students that complete an approved Alberta Level 1 insurance course can receive the GLQP certification and register for the provincial licensing exam. There are no such requirements for Level 2 & 3 licensing courses as of yet. However, you can find PNC Learning listed on the AIC website as an educator for continuing education and all 3 licensing levels.
PNC Learning is an approved course provider with the AIberta Insurance Council for both licensing and CE courses.
