The level 1 insurance licensing requirements are different in every province. With each province’s regulator setting different requirements, it can be hard to get all the information you need all in 1 place. This guide from PNC Learning will cover everything you need to know about getting your level 1 insurance license in Canada.
To get your license, it is a very simple 3 step process:
Level 1 Insurance Licensing Step 1) Study For The Exam
The course you need depends on which province you are in.
BC, SK, MB & Atlantic Provinces
If you are in these provinces, you can either take the Fundamentals of Insurance course or the CAIB 1 course to get your Level 1 license.
Alberta
In Alberta, the Alberta Insurance Council has their own course materials. The course for Alberta is the Alberta General Insurance Level 1 course.
Before you can take the provincial exam with the AIC, you’ll need to complete a course and get certified by an approved education provider like PNC Learning.
Ontario
In Ontario, the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario requires the RIBO 1 course.
Level 1 Insurance Licensing Step 2) Pass The Exam
After you have completed these courses and feel ready, it’s time to take and pass the provincial exam. If you need help registering for the exam, we have details information available inside the course.

Step 3) Find A Job
After you’ve passed the exam, you’ve done the hard part. The next step now is to find a job. Your new employer will sponsor your license and help you complete the rest of the licensing paperwork.
There are a lot of different jobs available in the industry. For example, you can work in customer service, sales in the office, sales outside the office, build your own independent business, or work more administrative roles. It all depends on what you like and fits with your personality.
