Even though the LLQP exam is multiple choice and open book, it can be pretty challenging for a lot of people. Here are 5 LLQP exam tips to help you pass on the first try!

What to Expect From the Exam

If you want to pass the exam, you first need to know what you’re dealing with. I won’t go into too much detail here because we have another article on LLQP exam information, but there are 4 modules to the LLQP exam:

  1. Life Insurance
  2. Accident & Sickness Insurance (A&S)
  3. Segregated Funds & Annuities
  4. Ethics and Professional Practice (Common Law or Quebec version)

There’s a lot to study here, but fortunately, CISRO has released an LLQP curriculum and a Life Insurance Competency Profile to help you know what to focus on.

Read The Question Carefully

Make sure you read the questions carefully because they like to put in a lot of tricks, double negatives, or little words like “NOT” that can change the entire meaning of the question.

They also like to throw in a bunch of scenario information at the beginning of the question when what they’re really asking you is usually found in the last sentence.

We’ve written at length about how to pass multiple choice exams. Those tips still hold true for the LLQP exam.

Don’t Second-Guess Yourself

This one is controversial, but I think it works. Don’t second-guess your answers unless you see a question later on that directly contradicts what you’ve answered previously. You chose that answer for a reason, and usually, if you change your answer, you’ll end up getting it wrong.

Take an LLQP Exam Prep Course

Not many people can study for and pass the LLQP exam without any help. If you’re in the majority of people who need help, check out our LLQP exam prep course. It’s designed with the same philosophy that has made our general insurance exam prep courses so successful.

In addition to the course, every student gets access to:

  • A highly qualified and dedicated LLQP tutor
  • A detailed study and exam roadmap
  • A pass guarantee and all the support you need to make sure you are successful

Use Practice Questions & Mock Exams

One of the most invaluable resources we provide is a comprehensive set of practice questions. We formulate these practice questions for a variety of purposes. Some are there to reinforce certain tricky concepts, while others are meant to mimic what you might see on the real exam to get you prepared for the exam question style. Fortunately, CISRO has been kind enough to release some sample LLQP exam questions for all 4 modules for free.

The single biggest challenge students face on the exam is the way they word and formulate the questions. Using our practice exams is the best way to get accustomed to it. Once you have a good grasp of the material, you should try to simulate the exam. Save at least one of the practice exams we give you to test yourself under exam conditions. That means setting yourself a time limit and taking your exam in the same part of the house you intend to write the actual exam to give yourself as immersive an experience as possible.

Another key use of practice questions is to identify weaknesses. Instead of studying the book or chapter from cover to cover, it can be more effective to use the practice questions to identify areas of weakness and focus your efforts there. This is especially important as you get closer to the exam date and your review time becomes more limited.

Get Familiar with CISRO Reference Material

During the exam, you will be given the CISRO textbook available in PDF format as a reference. Some people might hear this and think, “Great!  Now I don’t have to study at all!”

In my experience, this is not true, and you should avoid making the same mistake. There are too many questions and too little time for you to reference the book for each question and still be able to complete the exam. And because the LLQP exams are open book, the questions will be a bit more difficult and really test your understanding and application of the concepts you’ve learned in real-life scenarios similar to what you would see when dealing with clients. So, that’s the bad news.

The good news is that means you don’t have to memorize every minute detail of every concept. Rather, it can be more effective to understand the general concepts, how they apply, when they apply, and most importantly, where to find them inside the textbook. That way, you can answer the simpler questions using what you’ve learned, and when you do need to reference the book, you know exactly where to go to find what you’re looking for.

As part of your studies, take some time to flip through the table of contents and understand where the different topics are found.

Passing the LLQP exam on your first attempt requires a strategic approach that goes beyond simply knowing the material. Success comes from understanding the exam’s unique challenges, including tricky question wording, scenario-based problems, and time constraints, and preparing for them accordingly. The most effective preparation combines a thorough study of the 4 core modules with targeted practice using mock exams and practice questions to identify weaknesses and become familiar with the LLQP exam’s question style.

While the open-book format might seem like an advantage, it’s crucial to develop a solid understanding of key concepts and know exactly where to find information in the reference materials, rather than relying on the textbook for every question. Remember to read questions carefully, trust your first instincts, and invest in a quality exam prep course to give you the knowledge you need.

With the right preparation strategy and mindset, you can approach the LLQP exam with confidence and achieve the passing score you need to start a lucrative career in life insurance.
