If you are life insurance licensed in Alberta, you need to meet the Alberta Insurance Council Life Insurance CE Requirements each year. If you fail to earn enough CE credits, you risk losing your life agent license. The same rules apply to Accident and Sickness (A&S) insurance agents as well.

If you are from another province, please see our other articles on BC Life Insurance CE Requirements. Or visit our Life Insurance CE Courses page for details on the CE requirements in other provinces.

If you are general insurance licensed, see our General Insurance CE Courses page for details.

Alberta Insurance Council Life Insurance Agent CE Requirements

How many CE credits do I need for Alberta?

Life insurance and Accident & Sickness insurance agents in Alberta need 15 hours of CE credits for each licensing term.

What is the licensing term?

The licensing term in Alberta is July 1st to June 30th of the next year. For example, the 2021 licensing term is between July 1st, 2021 and June 30th, 2022.

Can I carry forward CE credits to the next year?

Yes, you can carry forward up to 7.5 hours of credits to the next year. So if you have completed 22.5 hours of CE courses this year, you only need 7.5 more hours the next year.

How do I report my hours to the Alberta Insurance Council?

You log into your AIC portal and input the course numbers into your CE Summary Report. Check the summary report to make sure you met all your requirements.

You do not need to send the certificates in but keep them in case you are audited.

Can I get an exemption for my Alberta CE credit requirements?

No, there is not exemption even if you are on maternity leave or long term disability.

What happens if I don’t get enough CE credits?

Then you will not be able to renew your license until you do. Your license will expire and you will not be able to renew it until you have satisfied your CE requirements.
