Insurance is a great career choice for many people because you get job security, stability, flexibility, and room to grow. There is a role in this industry for anyone no matter what their preferences are. But to become an insurance agent in BC, there are some steps you have to follow:

Become An Insurance Agent Step 1). Study

To become an insurance agent in BC, you need to pass either the Fundamentals of Insurance or CAIB 1 exam to get your Level 1 insurance license. This license will enable you to sell all types of general insurance including home, auto, business, and travel insurance.

If you are looking for materials to help you with your exam preparation, I encourage you to review our online Fundamentals of Insurance / CAIB 1 course.

Step 2) Write The Exam

After you have spent 3-4 weeks with our program, you should be ready to write the exam. In BC, you would register with the I.B.A.B.C. to write either the Fundamentals of Insurance or CAIB 1 exam.

Pro Tip: instructions on how to register are included inside our course.

Step 3) Apply For Jobs/Licensing

Now that you have passed the exam, you meet the educational requirement to apply for your license but still need to find a sponsor. In BC, your license sponsor is your employer so start applying for jobs.

With your exam results and certificate in hand, you would prepare your resume, cover letter, and start applying for jobs in the industry. Once you have secured a job, your employer would sponsor you and help you complete your licensing registration process.

Pro Tip: Ask us for help with your job hunt. We can help review your job search materials (resume, CV, etc.) and refer you to one of our employment partners.

Step 4) Celebrate Becoming An Insurance Agent

Congratulations on starting your new career in this amazing industry. When you are just starting out and exploring our options, there are a lot of insurance jobs you can try out. If you are great with relationship-building and sales and don’t mind trading a steady salary for flexibility, try being a producer (independent sales person).
