For a lot of people getting into the insurance industry, one of the first jobs they get is selling car insurance. It’s a popular job because it’s by far the largest sector of the insurance industry and it’s easy to sell because it’s relatively standard and everyone has to get it if they own a car. So one common question I get from new brokers is: “how do I get an auto insurance license in Ontario”?
Auto Insurance License in Ontario
To sell auto insurance in Ontario, you need to be licensed as a general insurance broker. To do that, you need to pass the RIBO Entry Level 1 exam.
Even though you only plan to sell auto insurance, you will need to learn all sorts of different insurance concepts including home insurance, commercial insurance, liability insurance, and automobile insurance in preparation for that exam. You can pick up some RIBO 1 study materials on our website.
Once you’ve registered for and passed the exam, all that’s left to do is apply for your license and try to find a job at an insurance brokerage. There are a lot of different insurance brokerages out there that specialize in different areas of insurance so make sure you find one that does personal insurance and has auto insurance contracts.
