If you’re looking to become an auto insurance agent in BC or sell home, business, and other types of general insurance, you need to get your General Insurance License. To put things simply, it’s a 3 step process:
Step #1: Study for Your Fundamentals of Insurance or CAIB 1 Exam
In British Columbia (BC), two of the exams you can use to get your Level 1 license is Fundamentals of Insurance or CAIB 1.
For new brokers, I always recommend taking Fundamentals because the exam is cheaper and it only consists of 100 multiple choice questions whereas the CAIB 1 exam contains short answer questions. For many new brokers, multiple choice questions are easier to handle.
There are many different ways to prepare for your exams, including our online Fundamentals of Insurance course and online CAIB 1 course.
Step #2: Pass the Exam
Regardless of which course you chose, once you’re ready, you’ll need to take the exam. In BC, you can register for them with the Insurance Brokers Association of BC (IBABC) on their website.
If you need help registering for your exam or if you need a proctor because you’re writing it outside of the Lower Mainland, let us know.
Step #3: Apply for a Job and General Insurance License
Now that you’ve passed your entry level exam, you’ve finished the hardest part of this licensing process. Now comes the fun part where you start looking for work in your new field of choice and look for an employer to sponsor your license.
If you studied with us in preparation for your insurance licensing exam, we’ll be able to help you with this step as well. Get in touch and we’ll try to make some introductions and smooth your transition into your new insurance job.
